A little about me

I was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and have lived and worked here all my life.

I retired (early) from earning a living so I could live a life, i.e. pursue creative interests (carving, writing). I soon metamorphosed into a full-feathered snowbird!

Previously, I worked at a great many different jobs / careers / pursuits in my life, most of which have faded into irrelevancy in the mists of time...

Selected highlights:
1970s: founding Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Choral Federation, which thrives to this day.

1980s: earned a Small Craft Master's Certificate ("40-ton ticket") which qualified me to skipper sailing charters between Halifax and Mahone Bay and Halifax Harbour tours on my 53' gaff-rigged ketch.

1990s: managed Atlantic region for national insurance companies specializing in employee benefits, a long, hard story - 
 
2000s: - with a very happy ending: I bought an employee benefits brokerage and subsequently sold it to a great new owner.

2008-11: I returned to work as Director at one of Canada's oldest cultural institutions, the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. It was sinking under the weight of its 125 years of history. Modern business practices soon made its future possible again. That was fun!

I'm happily occupied in the winters writing prose and poetry. That effort resulted in my first book, Where's Home?, being published in the midst of the 2020 pandemic, by Moose House Publications.

I'm happily occupied in the summers carving stones, a more immediate and different creative experience, using hand and eye and noisy, dusty tools.
